Input from the Essipit Community
The Essipit Montagnais Band Council has expressed to the governments its concerns and interest regarding enhancement of the park, management of activities within the park and the coordination structure. The presence of this community bears witness to a thousand-year-old Amerindian culture that continues to enrich the modern world as the Essipit Montagnais play an active part in the social, cultural and economic lives of their region. The provisions of the management plan that concern the Montagnais seek neither to deny nor to recognise the rights of this community. Ancestral rights and land claims as well as the provisions of the park’s management plan are currently being negotiated by the Montagnais Nations and the Governments of Canada and Québec.
